I've gone to a couple industry events since I’m a Publicity Intern at Atlantic Records. I’ve done attendance check-ins and if I’m lucky I get to laugh and kiki with an artist - only for five minutes because I'm still at work, ya know?

I’m always down to go to an industry event, not only to network but to just get familiar with the scene. I recently went to Lynn Hobson’s, a Hip-Hop Publicist, book signing event at Le Reve. As much as I love a good he say, she say drunk text story, Hobson’s “Diary of A Hip-Hop Publicist” wasn’t that – it was realistic and authentic.

Hobson’s autobiography gave an in-depth account as to how she started out as a Business major at Howard University and is now a go-to buzz builder in the industry. Right now in my life I’m looking for some kind of guidance as to what my next step will be and this book came to me at the right time.

Of course I can’t follow every move she made but I can look to her hustle as a reference. She made some key points to keep in mind for anyone trying to make it in the industry:

Networking Will Always Save You

Remember names, remember roles/titles and remember to be your best. There were several times when Lynn was down and out then someone she previously worked with reached out to her for assistance because they remember how dope she is at her job.

Your Work Is Your Life

We’re young and hungry, right? If not, then you need to be starving right now to get to where you want to be. Simple.

Hold Onto Your Beliefs For Balance

Hobson had her faith in God and it kept her centered throughout her life. Figure out what you’re doing it for and keep it on your mind 28/5. Feel free to take a break and reevaluate but don’t stop. No one goes to quitters for advice and they never have dope stories for Squad.
